Esher Cricket Club News

Graeme Newman

Graeme was born in 1953 and grew up in New Road, Esher in a house overlooking our ground. He attended Milbourne Lodge School and at 13 started boarding at Felsted School, a good cricket school in Essex. There he developed his love of sport and also became Head Boy, an early recognition of his leadership talents. Living so close it was natural that he quickly became involved with Esher Cricket Club, a special relationship that was to last all his life.

He played in all three X1s, did all the Barbados tours, played Sunday cricket and served diligently on different ECC committees. He started ECC 3rd X1 but also kept wicket for Surrey >50s. Whether it was rugby, cricket or in later life golf, he was a competitive games player who liked to win on the field, but had the social skills to thoroughly enjoy himself and make many friends off the field.

After the death of Peter Wreford in 2007, Graeme was approached to take over the Presidency of the Club. He had all the skills and experience necessary. He was delighted and proud to be offered the position. Typically however he was very concerned of letting people down & being unable to fulfil his duties to the maximum if his cancer treatment had to be restarted. Thankfully he took the job: a lasting tribute and true recognition for his support and work for ECC over many years.

Always well organised, excellent administrator and blessed with a cheeky sense of humour, after retiring from rugby he enjoyed his referee duties with the London Society of Referees. For a career, he followed his Dad into the property business and blessed with safe hands, a strong sense of duty and strong work ethic was again successful.

Unfortunately the cancer did return and again Graeme bravely with typical determination fought the disease. This battle he finally lost and he died peacefully aged 55 on April 17th 2008 at the Princess Alice Hospice, Esher. On May 2nd a wonderfully constructed Thanksgiving Service, was held with a packed congregation, at St Martin's Church, Dorking. The church where he and Lizzie were married 27 years ago.

Kevin O'Brien Dies Suddenly

Kevin died suddenly in his sleep on Tuesday October 16th 2007. He was 52. Born in Manchester, educated at Milbourne Lodge and Bradfield College, Kevin was well known to a wide circle of friends in Esher. A brilliant all round games player from an early age, he enjoyed the comraderie gained through team games. He was never happier than sharing a pint and a cigarette in a club or pub with his many friends.

A Celebration of his Life took place at Christ Church, Esher on Friday October 26th 2007. Trevor Barringer, John O'Leary and his sister Sammy gave the packed church accurate, moving and sincere tributes.

Esher 1st XI miss out on promotion

In a nail biting end to the season, Esher 1st XI missed out on an immediate return to the Surrey Championship Premiership by a mere 3 points. With Spencer having secured their promotion, the final weekend of the season saw Esher playing Malden Wanderers for the remaining promotion spot in a "winner takes all" match. Unfortunately Malden Wanderers proved the stronger and took the win, leapfrogging Spencer to top spot in the 1st division, with Esher dropping to third.
